Love Is Blindness / En aveugle

Love Is Blindness: love is blind, it numbs the senses and reason, it is merciless; it is a mechanism, an abandonment, a tearing apart, an ecstasy, a drowning; it is the night that falls over everything that isn’t love, it is wanting nothing more than to be enveloped in this night… The song is a step into this night, it is at once a necklace of metaphors of what love inflicts and a conscious renunciation of the desire to protect oneself from it.

En aveugle (blindly) : « en aveugle, je plonge »/“blindly, I dive,” these are the words on which the song opens in French; this is a deliberate blindness – just like in the original text –, a conscious choice to close one’s eyes rather than being blinded. To dive here is to take a risk, fully aware of what one might leave behind, of what one could be called upon to deny, of the great winds that could rise, of the dam that could break. It is this letting go in the face of what is imperative in the feeling of love that I wanted to give new words; a gentle capitulation, which is also a serene resolution, an acceptance to yield to what is greater than oneself.

Love Is Blindness

Written by

U2

Love is blindness / I don't want to see / Won’t you wrap the night around me? / Oh my heart / Love is blindness

In a parked car / In a crowded street / You see your love / Made complete / Thread is ripping / The knot is slipping / Love is blindness

Love is clockworks / And cold steel / Fingers too numb to feel / Squeeze the handle / Blow out the candle / Love is blindness

Love is blindness / I don't want to see / Won’t you wrap the night around me? / Oh my love / Blindness

A little death / Without mourning / No call / And no warning / Baby, a dangerous idea that almost makes sense

Love is drowning / In a deep well / All the secrets / And no one to tell / Take the money, honey / Blindness

Love is blindness / I don't want to see / Won’t you wrap the night around me? Oh my love / Blindness

En aveugle

Blindly

Translation of the

French adaptation

Blindly / I dive, come what may / Love doesn't hold back, oh my love / Take over / My heart

The rivers / Are bursting from their banks / The Earth on its axis / Has deviated / Everything escapes me / Everything is out of control / In my heart

Blindly / I will deny / Everything that has to be denied / A huge waste / To which I smile / In my heart

Blindly / I dive, come what may / Love doesn't hold back / Oh my love, take over / My heart

Recklessness / Is the only way to go / Reverence / To what breaks me / The dam can only break, taking everything away

Blindly / I will let you / Take over the project / Of my life / Nothing works anymore, chosen one / Of my heart

Blindly / I dive, come what may / Love doesn't hold back, oh my love / Take over / My heart
