And No More Shall We Part /
À jamais sommes unis

And No More Shall We Part: a man recalls his tumultuous romantic relationship – the kind that makes one say: “neither with you nor without you” – and a hope (a foolish one?) for peace that would come from having consented to marriage.

À jamais sommes unis (forever we have joined our destinies):  the same dynamic of love, the same joy tinged with worry at the idea of getting married. In the original song, the man dodges the question of the loss of freedom associated with marriage by telling himself that, after all, one is never free. In French, I made him confront his fear of never finding a newfound peace of mind after getting married – fear that he rejects on the grounds that, after all, peace of mind doesn’t exist.

And No More Shall We Part

Written by

Nick Cave

And no more shall we part / It will no longer be necessary / And no more will I say, dear heart / I am alone and she has left me

And no more shall we part / The contracts are drawn up / The ring is locked upon the finger / And never again will my letters start / Sadly, or in the depths of winter

And no more shall we part / All the hatchets have been buried now / And all of birds will sing to your beautiful heart / Upon the bough

And no more shall we part / Your chain of command / Has been silenced now / And all of those birds / Would’ve sung to your beautiful heart / Anyhow

Lord, stay by me / Don’t go down / I will never be free / If I'm not free now

Lord, stay by me / Don’t go down / I never was free / What are you talking about?

For no more shall we part / And no more shall we part

À jamais sommes unis

Forever We Have Joined Our Destinies

Translation of the

French adaptation

Forever we have joined our destinies / Who would have thought that one day we’d come to this / So great was my fear of saying yes to you / Between two crises, between two outbursts

Forever we have joined our destinies / The contract is signed, I put the ring on your finger / You will no longer hear me, in my night / Screaming how, without you, I drown

Forever we have joined our destinies / The hatchet is truly buried / You, so beautiful under the arbor, covered in confetti / You cried tears of joy

Forever we have joined our destinies / A carpet of flowers, doves, and a train of silk / You swear on your heart that this is the happiest day of your life / Everything is as it should be

Living hurts so much / Far too much / Let peace of mind come / Let relief come

Living hurts so much / Far too much / But “peace of mind” / Who believes in such nonsense?

Forever we have joined our destinies / Forever we have joined our destinies
