Once I Loved (O Amor Em Paz) / Tant d’années

The English text is adapted from Portuguese. In both languages, the song expresses the regret of having let love slip away, out of pride perhaps, only to experience an immense sadness afterwards; and then, the joy of having found it again, years later, with a sharp awareness of how infinitely precious this love is.

In French, I focused on the regret that a love story came to an end, one that remains impossible to turn away from, and how the passing years will only have confirmed how precious it was above all others - to the point where, at the end of one's life, only this love will be worth saying: “I loved.” In French, the hoped-for reunion never took place, but the waiting and the hope persist.

Once I Loved (O Amor Em Paz)

Written by

Antonio Carlos Jobim & Vicinius de Moraes

English lyrics by Ray Gilbert

Once I loved / And I gave so much love to this love / It was the world to me

Once I cried / At the thought I was foolish an’ proud / And let you say goodbye

Then, one day / From my infinite sadness you came / And brought me love again

Now I know / That no matter whatever befalls / I’ll never let you go

I will hold you close / Make you stay / Because love is the saddest thing / When it goes away...

Love is the saddest thing / When it goes away

Tant d’années

So Many Years

Translation of the

French adaptation

So many years / Not even knowing where you are / Doing my best to forget

It’s the past / Still, east to west to north to south / I search for your silhouette

If I had to / Go through the same agony again / Oh no, I wouldn’t hesitate

Who said / Only one person is missing and the whole world / Yes, the whole world seems depopulated?

You are my peril / And my glory / At the end of my life I will owe you the words / “I loved”

To you alone will I owe / Saying “I loved”
