Untitled / Que pour toi
Untitled: why did Tom McRae want to give his song no title? I thought that this might be explained by the fact that the song evokes a romantic expectation never yet fulfilled: it is an unwritten page of his life, it remains “untitled”. I thought that it might be also out of a prudish reflex, that Tom McRae was evoking in this song a romantic episode that he experienced, so vivid that at the time of writing the text and even at the time of singing it, he had to place it as foreign to him, to deny its autobiographical part. In the very rhythm of the song is inscribed a kind of difficulty to breathe; the song speaks to me of unbearable love, when one no longer feels like existing without the other, when there can be no peace except in the presence of the other.
Que pour toi (only for you) : a candid admission of emotional dependency, of helplessness in the face of overwhelming feelings; waiting, as in the original song, for a calmness – and even salvation – that can only come from the other.
