We Never Change /
Tout ce que je demande
A friend once asked me: do you think you can change the person you love? I found this question very strange. I knew she was in a relationship and I wondered what, in her opinion, should have changed in her life partner. I answered that no, I didn't believe that we could change the other person, and that it seemed problematic to me to even aspire to do so. We Never Change felt like the same answer to this very question: yes, we remain the same throughout our lives, always carrying the same flaws, the same aspirations. These aspirations, in the song, are simple, basic: being there for others, having a good life, friends, and a welcoming home.

We can interpret the text of We Never Change as an inner monologue, a look at oneself; we can also hear it as a message to the person we love, a way of saying to them: “Don’t hold it against me for what I am, for who I am now is who I will be; this is me, all of me, take it or leave it.” It is this second angle that I favoured in French. Tout ce que je demande (all I ask for) celebrates the happiness found, the happiness that’s already there, which doesn’t need anything else, which doesn’t constantly bite the bait of aspirations yet to be satisfied. When you have what’s essential, you have to recognize it within yourself; when love is present, you must give it all your care. That’s what’s expressed in Tout ce que je demande, which I aimed to make, just as much as We Never Change, an ode to quiet happiness.
